Do you need to remove a pontoon from a lake prior to the winter freeze?

Don't just answer yes because everyone does it or my boatman says so. I looking for someone who has left there boat in for years without problems or someone who has had firsthand damage from a boat left in. I'm in northern Wisconsin with no major water current issues. Thanks, Chuck
