our 18hp 1973 evinrude outboard runs but doesnt do in forward or reverse?

we were out on the water and it made an excellerating sound and then stopped going forward .. I shifted it into reverse and it worked for 15 seconds and then it didnt work either and then we were stranded....it stills runs great but doesnt move the pontoon boat at all now.......any ideas
